Three local routes


Around Sedbergh, Dentdale and Barbondale. Described on the Cycle the Dales website. These vary in length from 13 to 25 miles, and are graded blue or red.

Long Distance Cycling Trails

The Pennine Cycleway


Route 68 of the National Cycle Network from Derby to Berwick–on–Tweed, passes through Sedbergh. Details on the Sustrans website.

The Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way


Passes through Dent. Details on the Cycle the Dales website. The Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way map, published by Harvey's, is normally available at the Sedbergh Information and Book Centre, priced at £6–95. There is also a free leaflet giving an overview of the route.

The Pennine Bridleway


Begins in Derbyshire's White Peak, at its northern end traverses the head of Dentdale, goes over Garsdale Head, and finishes up in the village of Ravenstonedale, 11 miles North-east of Sedbergh. Details on the Pennine Bridleway website.

Lakes and Dales Loop


A circular route that skirts the edge of the Lake District and the Howgills, passing through Kirkby Lonsdale and Sedbergh. Details on the Lakes and Dales Loop website.

Mountain Bike Routes

The Bowderdale Classic


Starts and finishes in Sedbergh. A 24 mile route that takes in The Calf (676m) and the village of Ravenstonedale. Details on the Yorkshire Dales website.

The Howgills Classic

Tour of Whernside


A 24 mile loop that can be started//finished in Dent, Ribblehead or Ingleton. Details on the Yorkshire Dales website.

Cycling around Sedbergh, Dentdale and the Lune Valley


Map and guide to 5 'do–in–day circular rides on quiet roads and country lanes' is exactly what it says. Routes vary from 14 to 24 miles in length and are graded as easy/moderate to challenging. There are useful cycling tips and information about public transport. £1–50.

Cycle Rides in the Yorkshire Dales


Published by Harvey's, 8 one day routes with maps and descriptions. It includes two rides from Sedbergh. One is a 14 mile circuit described as 'challenging', which mostly follows lanes around the eastern Howgills above the Lune Valley. The other route, of 19 miles and described as 'gentle', mostly follows a quiet lane from the foot of Holme Fell to Dent, then takes you to Cowgill and back, through very varied scenery. £2–50.
